What a Bead Mill Actually Costs

Six price variablesThree size bandsFour hidden lines

Nobody in this industry publishes a number, and the reason is legitimate: the same chamber built for water-based coating and for solvent under ATEX are different machines. What can be published is what moves the number — so you can budget before you talk to anyone.

What sets the price

Six things move the number. Only two of them are the machine.

Two buyers can be quoted very different prices for what they both call "a 30 litre bead mill", and both quotations can be correct. These are the six reasons.

VariableWhat it does to the priceHow to tell whether you need it
Chamber volumeThe single largest factor. Price scales close to linearly from 5 L to 30 L, then flattens — a 150 L unit is not five times a 30 L unit.Scale from a lab result, not from a brochure. If 5 L proves the process, quote 5 L first.
Wetted materialsSS316L is the baseline. Silicon carbide, zirconia or full ceramic lining adds a real percentage, and ceramic is not available on every model.Only pay for it if your specification has a contamination limit — not because it sounds better.
Separator typeSlotted screen is the cheapest. A dynamic gap adds cost; a second independent drive for a centrifugal separator adds more. The separator is chosen by media size. Do not buy a centrifugal separator to run 0.3 mm beads.
Drive and controlsFixed speed, VFD, or PLC with recipe storage. ATEX execution for solvent products sits here too, and it is not a small line item.If you run more than one formulation, recipe storage pays for itself in scrap alone.
Pressure and containmentDouble mechanical seal with barrier fluid is standard on the nano range. Closed-loop solvent operation, nitrogen blanketing and vapour recovery are extras.Tell us the solvent and the flash point at enquiry stage — it changes the build, not just the paperwork.
What is in the boxFirst media charge, spare seal kit, FAT report, crating. Some quotations include these and some do not, which is why prices from different suppliers are not comparable.Always ask for the same scope from every supplier before comparing numbers.

A budget range for a 30 L production unit is USD 25,000 – 45,000 depending on how many of the six apply. We confirm the figure against your specification rather than quoting a headline number that changes later.

Size bands

Three bands, and what actually changes between them

Price does not scale linearly with chamber volume. What changes between the bands is not only size — it is what the machine is expected to survive.

BandChamberWhat it is forWhat changes
Laboratory0.5 – 10 LFormulation development, scale-up studies, sample production for customersOne machine, one operator, results that have to be reproducible on a production unit later
Pilot / small production15 – 30 LTrial batches, small-volume specialty products, second-line capacityThe size most first-time buyers actually need — and the one most often over-specified
Production60 – 150 LContinuous or campaign production, multi-shift operationWear parts, spares holding and service access start to matter more than purchase price
The gap

Four lines that are usually missing from the quotation

This is where a cheap quotation stops being cheap. Ask every supplier for the same five-line scope, then compare.

First media charge

0.3 mm zirconia is a real number of kilograms, and on a nano duty it is not a rounding error. Some quotations include it, most do not.

Freight and insurance

A 150 L mill is a crate, not a parcel. Ask for CIF as well as FOB — the difference is often larger than the difference between two suppliers.

Installation and commissioning

Who connects it, aligns it, runs the first batch and signs the acceptance? If the answer is "you", budget for it.

Spares holding

Seals, screens and a spare rotor. On a two-shift operation, one week of downtime costs more than the entire spares kit.

How to spend less without buying a worse machine

  • Test at 5 L before you quote 30 L. Most over-specification happens because nobody measured.
  • Do not buy the separator you do not need. A centrifugal separator on 0.3 mm media is money spent on nothing.
  • Fix the materials question honestly. Ceramic wetted parts are worth it when there is a contamination limit, and are decoration when there is not.
  • Buy media separately. It is a consumable with its own specification, and mill suppliers are rarely the cheapest source.
  • Ask for the wear cost per tonne, not the price. On an abrasive slurry the second number is the one that decides whether the project works.
Questions

Before you ask

Why will nobody publish a price?

Because the same 30 L chamber can be built for a water-based coating or for a solvent product under ATEX, and those are not the same machine. A published number would either be wrong for most buyers or be the price of the cheapest possible build. What can be published is the structure, which is what this page is.

What is the cheapest way to find out if I need a big mill?

Test on a small one. A 5 L unit uses the same media and tip speed as a 150 L unit, so the fineness you reach is the fineness you will reach. What does not scale directly is throughput and heat removal — ask for both numbers from the test.

Do you quote FOB or CIF?

Either. FOB if you have your own forwarder, CIF if you would rather we handled it. Ask for both when you request a quotation — the difference is often larger than the difference between two suppliers' FOB prices.

What is not included?

Freight, insurance, import duty, installation and commissioning, and the first media charge unless you ask for it. Those five lines are where a cheap quotation stops being cheap.

Can I buy the media separately?

Yes, and you probably should. Media is a consumable with its own specification, and buying it from the mill supplier is convenient but rarely the lowest cost per kilogram.

Next step

Send the specification, get a number you can budget against

Material, target D90, throughput and whether there is a solvent involved. Those four answers are enough to put a defensible range on the table — and to say if a smaller machine would do the job.
